Israeli Forces Launch Brutal Crackdown in Occupied West Bank

By TheNATIONWEEK.com News Desk | October 26, 2026

OCCUPIED WEST BANK – Following a deadly attack in Hebron that killed two Israeli soldiers, Israeli forces have initiated an intensified military operation across the occupied West Bank against Palestinians. This offensive, marked by mass arrests, forced displacements, home demolitions, and an unprecedented lockdown, has sparked widespread condemnation and fears of a severe humanitarian crisis.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration to “destroy this place, to change it completely” signals a brutal escalation of tactics, prompting warnings from human rights organizations that these actions could constitute war crimes.

Hebron Under Siege: Mass Displacement and Demolitions

The epicenter of the crackdown is Hebron, where hundreds of Palestinian families have been forcibly removed from their homes. In the al-Jalda neighborhood, approximately 300 families were displaced, carrying only minimal belongings. Eyewitness accounts describe a “very tough night” as Israeli bulldozers demolished a three-story building, giving families just five minutes to retrieve their possessions. Further evacuations are underway in the Ein Deir Bahha area, with Israeli troops surrounding the residence of a suspect in the fatal attack.

Palestinian activist Issa Amro reports that nearly 800,000 Palestinians in the Hebron governorate are now “under siege,” with all entrances and exits sealed. Displaced families are fleeing “without carrying enough goods or clothing, or the children’s schoolbags,” highlighting the immediate and severe impact on their lives.

Widespread Military Operations and Escalating Anxiety

The military operation extends beyond Hebron, targeting at least 15 towns primarily in the northern West Bank, including Nablus, Jenin, Tubas, and Qalqilya. Raids on Palestinian homes and mass arrests, reportedly totaling around 70 individuals, have been conducted in numerous villages. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society states that hundreds of homes in Hebron alone were raided by Saturday morning, with dozens converted into military interrogation centers.

Residents across the occupied territory are expressing “a lot of anxiety” and fear that Israel’s “successful model” of forced displacement and massive demolitions, previously employed in Tulkarem and Jenin refugee camps, could be replicated across the West Bank. Such replication would lead to prolonged displacement and widespread loss of homes.

Unprecedented Lockdown and Humanitarian Catastrophe

The Israeli military has imposed a full lockdown across the West Bank, effectively isolating millions of Palestinians. Nearly 1,000 checkpoints and gates have been closed, severely disrupting access to healthcare, education, and economic activity. This collective punishment measure has been condemned by the Palestinian Authority, which has urged immediate international intervention to avert a humanitarian disaster. Mustafa Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative party, described the closure as transforming every city and village into “a small prison” and cautioned that this collective punishment “will lead to explosions.”

Context of Heightened Tensions and Allegations of War Crimes

This aggressive clampdown unfolds amidst escalating tensions in the Palestinian territories, preceding upcoming Israeli elections. Reports of increased violent attacks by Israeli settlers and soldiers, particularly against olive harvesters, have been prevalent. Far-right Israeli officials have openly celebrated the offensive; Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich advocated for a “Gaza-like” operation, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the “dismantlement” of the Palestinian Authority and tighter movement restrictions.

Human rights organization B’Tselem has unequivocally condemned the planned offensive, warning that these actions constitute “collective punishment and acts that could constitute war crimes.” The United Nations, Palestinian officials, and various human rights groups have also voiced strong criticism. Hamas has condemned the operation as an extension of Israel’s “criminal aggression,” while the Palestinian Authority has reiterated its call for international pressure on Israel to protect Palestinians.

Rising Violence and Displacement

Since early 2025, over 40,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from their homes in the West Bank due to settler violence and military raids. The Palestinian Authority warns of “growing threats to expand the scope of forced displacement and destruction.” The Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission recorded 409 attacks by Israeli forces or settlers against Palestinian farmers and their land in October alone, describing it as “direct violence to force farmers from their land.” Even Western officials have faced violence, with Israeli settlers assaulting European diplomats and a US Democratic congressional candidate briefly detained by the Israeli military while assisting olive farmers.

The current escalation signals a dangerous new phase in the Israeli occupation, with profound and potentially irreversible consequences for millions of Palestinians.
