CATICLAN, Aklan – Boracay-bound travelers can expect a smoother journey as construction begins on a state-of-the-art passenger terminal at Caticlan Airport.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially launched the project, spearheaded by Megawide Construction Corp., to transform the bustling airport into a modern portal capable of handling the island’s ever-increasing influx of tourists.

The ambitious project is slated for completion within two years.

The upgrade represents a significant investment in the region’s crucial tourism infrastructure, a sector that contributes nearly 8 percent to the Philippines’ GDP.

During Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony, the President stressed the project’s broader economic impact.

“This new terminal is more than just construction; it’s a commitment to strengthening our economy and enhancing our tourism sector,” he said.

“The expanded capacity will provide a substantial boost to both local and national economies. Initiatives like this are key to achieving our goal of elevating that percentage.”

Currently the fourth busiest airport in the Philippines, Caticlan Airport served over three million passengers in 2024 alone, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.

The new facility promises to dramatically increase capacity, accommodating up to seven million passengers annually.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon underscored the vital role of public-private partnerships (PPP) in driving this critical infrastructure development, praising San Miguel Corp.’s commitment to completing the terminal by 2027.

“These partnerships allow us to unlock the full potential of our transport infrastructure, delivering significant benefits to our citizens,” Dizon said.

The upgraded terminal is designed to revolutionize the travel experience with state-of-the-art amenities focused on passenger flow, comfort, and safety.

Key improvements include:

• *Streamlined Check-in: Faster and more efficient processing at check-in counters.

• *Advanced Security: Modern security screening areas utilizing the latest technology to minimize delays while ensuring passenger safety.

• *Efficient Baggage Handling: Sophisticated baggage handling systems designed to reduce waiting times and improve baggage delivery accuracy.

• *Optimized Boarding: Improved passenger flow and reduced congestion at boarding gates.

“This project will further solidify Boracay’s position as a premier destination, invigorating the tourism economy and significantly enhancing the travel experience for both domestic and international visitors,” Dizon declared.

The Caticlan Airport upgrade is poised to be a transformative force, paving the way for economic growth and a more seamless travel experience for visitors from around the world, officials announced.
